Tesla G. Carrasquillo is an Associate at Abrams Fensterman, LLP, and a member of the firm’s Mental Health Law Practice Group, the only family-focused mental healthcare practice in the country. Ms. Carrasquillo focuses her practice on Mental Health Law and Guardianship Law, representing hospitals and healthcare facilities in Mental Hygiene Law Article 9 matters, as well as private clients, family members, and court appointees in Article 81 Guardianship proceedings.
Ms. Carrasquillo brings over a decade of experience in the fields of Mental Hygiene, Criminal Defense, and Civil Litigation. Prior to joining Abrams Fensterman, she served as an Associate Attorney with the Mental Hygiene Legal Service, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, where she represented individuals with psychiatric and developmental disabilities in proceedings under Mental Hygiene Law Articles 9, 10, and 81. In that role, she conducted both bench trial and jury trials, hearings and litigated matters involving psychiatric treatment over objection, retention, discharge, and guardianship determinations.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Carrasquillo worked as a Staff Attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, where she represented indigent defendants charged with felony and misdemeanor offenses. She tried cases before juries and judges, litigated pretrial evidentiary and suppression hearings, and served as defense counsel in the Human Trafficking Court, advocating for survivors of exploitation and coordinating rehabilitative and support services.
Most recently, Ms. Carrasquillo practiced at a mid-sized insurance defense firm, where she handled insurance defense litigation involving municipal liability, premises liability, and personal injury claims. Her diverse background across mental health, criminal defense, and civil litigation enables her to bring a comprehensive and empathetic approach to her clients’ legal needs.
Ms. Carrasquillo is also eligible for court appointments in Nassau County, Suffolk County, Queens County, and Westchester County as a Court Evaluator and Attorney for the Alleged Incapacitated Person pursuant to Part 36 of the Rules of the Chief Judge of the New York State Unified Court System.
Ms. Carrasquillo earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, where she was recognized as the Public Interest Attorney of the Year (2016) and received the Law Review/Moot Court Honors Board Award for Best Paper (2014). She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Queens College, City University of New York.
She is admitted to practice law in the State of New York and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Ms. Carrasquillo is fluent in Spanish.
