Alyssa A. Friedman is Partner and Chair of the Healthcare Fraud & Regulatory Defense Practice at Abrams Fensterman, LLP, where she represents nursing homes, hospitals, physician groups, healthcare executives, and licensed professionals in federal and state investigations, audits, and enforcement actions. With deep experience navigating OIG, DOJ, OMIG, CMS, MFCU, and commercial payor inquiries, Alyssa is widely recognized for her strategic handling of matters involving alleged fraud, waste, and abuse—and, increasingly, the role of AI-driven analytics and automated audit tools in shaping government oversight.
Prior to joining Abrams Fensterman, Alyssa was with Healthfirst, a non-profit health insurance company sponsored by some of the most prestigious hospitals and healthcare systems in New York where she was Assistant Vice President of the Special Investigations Unit specializing in risk mitigation and eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse. Alyssa also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General, Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in the New York State Attorney General’s Office where she investigated and prosecuted complex Medicaid fraud matters, as well as, abuse and neglect cases of nursing home residents. In addition, Alyssa served as an Assistant District Attorney, Investigations Division, Economic Crimes Bureau for nine years with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office where she managed and spearheaded a team of investigators, attorneys and cooperating witnesses in the development, investigation, and trial of multifaceted felony cases.
Alyssa earned her Juris Doctorate from New York Law School and her undergraduate degree at Loyola University in Maryland. During law school, she served as a Judicial Intern to the Honorable James Yates, New York State Supreme Court, as well as a legal intern with the Kings County District Attorney’s Office and the Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division. She also served as a Public Interest Fellow and a member of Moot Court Team and received both the Public Service Award Recipient and Best Advocate Award.
Alyssa advises clients on the legal and compliance challenges posed by emerging AI technologies, including algorithm-flagged billing anomalies, predictive utilization reviews, medical-necessity determinations, and automated payment integrity platforms. She helps healthcare organizations design defensible workflows, strengthen documentation practices, and prepare for heightened scrutiny as agencies integrate AI into fraud-detection, claims-monitoring, and investigative processes. Alyssa is a trusted voice on the intersection of AI, healthcare regulation, and enforcement risk. She brings a practical, real-world perspective to an evolving landscape.
Additionally, Alyssa has extensive experience in white collar criminal defense and has defended clients against local, state and federal prosecutions.
