Scam Alert for NY Healthcare Professionals – OPMC & OPD Defense

Home > Media > Publications > Scam Alert for NY Healthcare Professionals – OPMC & OPD Defense

All healthcare providers licensed in New York State should be aware of scams involving communications from people claiming to work for the NY Department of Health (“DOH”) and/or the NY State Education Department (“NYSED”).

Scammers have been pretending to be employed within the Department of Health and/or Department of Education. The technical details of each scam are varied, but a commonality will be that they will eventually lead to insistence on providing personal security information and/or monetary payment of a ‘fine’ to resolve the ‘allegations’. These impersonators often create a false sense of urgency, pushing providers to act before verifying legitimacy.

Don’t Be Fooled!

Jordan Fensterman, Director of the OPMC and OPD Defense Practices at Abrams Fensterman, offers a strong warning about what OPMC / OPD will – and won’t do.  Watch his latest video that explains what to look out for and how to protect yourself.

The Office of Professional Medical Conduct (“OPMC”) and the Office of Professional Discipline (“OPD”) will never ask for security information and/or password details. OPMC and OPD will never insist on a monetary penalty or fine without first negotiating and agreeing to some settlement in writing on a separate ink signed document.

If you are unsure if you have been contacted by a legitimate NY State investigator, or by a scammer, legal counsel should be consulted. No password information or monetary payment should ever be sent without first having the assurance that you are dealing with a legitimate State employee.
