Rachel Demarest Gold

Rachel Demarest Gold is a Partner at Abrams, Fensterman, Fensterman, Eisman, Formato, Ferrara, Wolf & Carone, LLP where she practices with the firm’s Labor and Employment, Criminal, and Government Litigation, Law and Policy practice groups.

Ms. Gold started her career as a prosecutor in the Office of the Bronx District Attorney where she was assigned to the Trial Division, prosecuting violent crimes.

In 1996, Ms. Gold left that position to join her family’s manufacturing business in Brooklyn as General Counsel. Ms. Gold returned to public service in 2002 as Special Assistant to the Minority Leader of the New York State Senate, Martin Connor, and then as his Chief of Staff.

Ms. Gold left the State Senate in 2004 and spent two years with a boutique lobbying firm where she was an Account Executive. Her clients included causes as diverse as corporate and land use clients NASCAR and The Related Companies, and not-for-profit institutions such as the Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.

Ms. Gold returned to prosecuting in 2007 in the Office of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, where she led the development of a new labor crimes unit in response to the state legislature’s passage of several laws creating criminality in the exploitation of workers and theft on government contracts that mandate specific pay rates. Ms. Gold developed an accredited CLE on the subject which she has presented statewide. Ms. Gold has also addressed groups throughout the State on employer compliance, and government incentives and assistance for employers.

When Andrew Cuomo was elected Governor, Ms. Gold went with his Administration where she became Special Counsel for Labor as well as the Deputy Commissioner for Legislation, Policy, and Federal Affairs at the New York State Department of Labor.

Amongst her responsibilities at the Labor Department, Ms. Gold oversaw all criminal enforcement divisions of the agency which include the Office of Special Investigations, the Unemployment Insurance Division, and the Joint Enforcement Task Force, created by Governor’s executive order to establish a collaboration amongst all state regulatory agency enforcement arms to combat worker misclassification and manipulation of UI, Tax, and Workers Compensation obligations. She was also responsible for all agency policy as well as legislation effecting Labor Department jurisdictions.

In 2015, Ms. Gold returned to the private sector as in-house counsel for both a consulting firm and a not-for-profit representing 100 nursing homes in the New York City area.

Ms. Gold received her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School where she was President of the Student Bar Association and a Notes and Comments Editor for the Brooklyn Journal of International Law. She earned a BA in Political Science from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

Ms. Gold has a long history of civic service. Former positions include: President, DUMBO Neighborhood Association; Chair, Independent Neighborhood Democrats Executive Board; Member, Brooklyn Bridge Park Local Development Corporation Board; and Member, Atlantic Yards Community Development Corporation Board. She was honored by the Carroll Gardens Association with their Public Service Award.

Ms. Gold currently volunteers her time serving as State Chair of the New York State Women’s Equality Party.

Ms. Gold is admitted to practice law in State of New York and the Federal Eastern District of New York.
