Antonio Margarito Cleared by NYSAC to Fight Miguel Cotto
Lake Success, NY - Antonio Margarito of Mexico has finally been granted a boxing license by the New York State Athletic Commission after a long and costly ordeal regarding the health of his surgically repaired right eye, injured in a bout last November against Manny Pacquiao. The decision was announced the other day by commissioner Judge Edwin Torres, speaking for commission members Melvina Lathan and Tom Santino. The commission reviewed reports from "several preeminent physicians," Torres said, but ultimately accepted the recommendation of Michael Goldstein, MD, JD, a commission-appointed ophthalmologist who examined Margarito. Dr. Goldstein is a board certified ophthalmologist, sub-specializing in corneal surgery. He is also a practicing attorney at Abrams, Fensterman, Fensterman, Fisman, Formato, Ferrara & Einiger, LLP. He is actively engaged in the practice of both law and medicine and provides legal services to the firm's large healthcare clientele.
"Following the thorough examination performed by Dr. Goldstein and his testimony that in his opinion the condition of Mr. Margarito's eye is such that he is fit to be in the ring, the commission rules that Mr. Margarito's petition for license in New York is granted," Torres said. He explained that the Commission took so long to make a decision because the findings and recommendations from both sides "were in conflict, which left us at an impasse." That's why Dr. Goldstein was brought in for the final evaluation.
Margarito is now free to fight Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto in a long-awaited rematch on December 3rd at Madison Square Garden in New York.
